Have you ever had your trail cam tampered with or, worse, stolen? Feel that sting of invasion and the loss of invaluable scouting data? Peyton has  been there, and in our latest episode, we tackle the prickly topic of trail cams on public land, sharing tales of frustration and the clash over ethics in the hunting community.

We're also buzzing about the much-anticipated Great American Outdoor Show, ready to share the inside scoop on what Steve, Frank, and I are most excited to see and experience. It's not all about the gear and the glory, though; we navigate through the intricacies of bow selection, debating the merits of fixed versus mechanical broadheads, and delve into the heart of hunting ethics, tackling the hot-button issue of doe management during critical times of the year.

Wrapping up with our usual dose of humor, our "Idiot of the Week" segment highlights the less-than-brilliant escapades of fellow outdoor enthusiasts. And as we look ahead to turkey hunting escapades and trout fishing adventures, we remind everyone of our upcoming game dinner at the Knights of Columbus, a culinary celebration of wild game and community. So, tune in, get informed, and join us in protecting our natural heritage while gearing up for your next outdoor pursuit.

Speaker 2:

Welcome back to the Garden State Outdoors and Podcast presented by Boondock Sounding. I'm your host, mike Nairdre.

Speaker 1:

I'm Peyton.

Speaker 3:

Smith, I'm Frank Mystica.

Speaker 4:

I'm Steve Molnar.

Speaker 2:

Welcome back everyone. It's been a for Peyton. It's been now what two weeks and he had an unfortunate event which we talked about literally on our last podcast episode, which we're going to dive into. But, steve, why don't you start us off with the announcement that you want to make?

Speaker 4:

Yeah, absolutely so. A friend of mine is a part of a group that is putting on a sportsman's family night. It's going to be down at Solid Rock Church down in South Jersey and that's going to be hosted by. They're actually going to have Chad and Marissa Sherer and it's going to be sponsored by CVA. Muzzle loaders, buck knives, dart and archery Pen Reels, range 129, forever Foul, taxidermy and the Rack Shack and many, many more.

Speaker 4:

Actually, a little bit of background. Chad has been an outfitter and guide for the past 30 years and he's also a multi-time world champion elk caller. His wife, marissa, is also an avid sportswoman and she's the first female that's ever been asked to be on the CVA's pro staff. They'll be sharing their love for the outdoors, their stories, their tips for hunting. Also very cool in attendance will be the mounts from some of the New Jersey state records Having typicals and non-typicals for shotgun, muzzle loader, crossbow are all going to be on display there, as well as many, many others. So it's going to be really an amazing event. It starts at 6.30, 6.30 to 9. It's $15 for adults, $10 for children, 8 to 13. That includes dinner, admittance, door prizes, including the chance to win a 10 point archery crossbow and a dart and bow from compound, bow from dart, and as well as many, many, many other prizes. So be sure to register by March 11th. Just go to solidrockbaptistorg and sign up. We'd love to see you there.

Speaker 2:

Yeah, no, definitely, and another one that will. A buddy of mine sent us this the other day. It is protect our recreation. Keep war in state for us where it's open. Did you get to read that, steve?

Speaker 4:

I didn't get through the whole thing, I did get to do kind of a synopsis on it and see what they were talking about. I mean, being down in the area I can identify because I used have used all of those roads. Many, many, many of those were in state sandy roads for a large portion of my life, so didn't get the full picture, but I got a pretty good idea. Basically, you're talking about trying to close roads because of illicit activity and stuff like that. Is that correct?

Speaker 4:

Yeah, I believe so so that's what a petition is trying to get to 1200 petitions or something like that.

Speaker 2:

Yeah, it's at right now it is at now it's at 1976. So the goal is 2700. So we're slowly, slowly closing in there. But basically the results of this pension will be declared to Governor Murphy, the DEP, commissioner, legislators and local Minnisfarables.

Speaker 2:

So I would imagine that this would definitely hunt I mean not hunt but ruin a bunch of access for hunters and everything like that, or fishermen or anything that, any type of outdoor activity that you're trying to do. So we'll post up the link in our bio and anyone that's interested please go take a look at that and go bring your signature. Anything can help because honestly, like we kind of talked about, like last three or four episodes ago, we're slowly, slowly, just losing more and more land every single day. So any little bit that we can do and hopefully stop as much as we can, because at some point it's just going to be down to seems like private land really only, and you know it's, it's just not, it's. That's not enough and you know we're not going to get the whole backstory until, like we did that last episode. But definitely all you outdoorsmen out there, like we really could use your help and you know, hope you guys, you know, get the signatures in it and it passes where we can. We don't have to worry about this anymore.

Speaker 4:

There's something in league with that too. Just a just a little bit of an explanation. So so much of Wharton state is actually you. Where you access that for hunting or whatever it is are through those roads. So if they do away with those, then it's just going to be the perimeter of Wharton state forest, which isn't always the most savory option for parking to access those woods. You're not getting nearly as deep into where you want to be without having maybe just on foot, really, I mean, I don't know that. Could they could extend that to e-bikes, anything with a motor? So yeah, this is definitely an important one, guys, and definitely reach out, sign this petition and read more about it and get yourself aware.

Speaker 2:

Yep, I agree. And then another announcement might as well do it in the beginning of our episode. Like I said, we're doing all the announcements early, official. Like I said last time, tomorrow we'll be dropping the ticket sales or you know where you can reserve your spot to do our game dinner? It will be at the Knights of Columbus in Springfield, new Jersey. So it's right, it's literally five minutes from my house. You know it's a nice area. There will be an open bar. It's a cash, not an open bar. My bad, it's a cash bar. So there will be a cash bar.

Speaker 2:

We'll have all different types of game meat but we'll also be, you know, catering and stuff like that. You know not everyone eats. You know the game animals and stuff like that they are going to. I'm trying to get some good exotics in there, so like it's going to be like a different little. You know tastes, like I said, I think we're trying to get raccoon in the building, trying to get some squirrel, obviously, in the building. You know bear will be in the building. Of course, venison I believe Bianca will be making her shepherd pie that she likes to make. I think we'll be doing like a pulled venison.

Speaker 2:

Guys, if there's anything that you guys want to specifically bring down, you feel free to make whatever you guys want and anyone who's coming to the show. If you do want to bring something, you're more than welcome to bring something. More food, the better. The more options, the better. We will be doing like a, you know, a raffle and everything like that. I think we're going to be doing a turkey calling competition and then, you know, once the rest of the details, we get them fully hashed out, there'll be some more things to do.

Speaker 2:

This will be our first one, so I don't want to like overdo this first one. I want this one to go smooth, simple and then next year, you know, add in more stuff. You know every year that we do this, but those are some of the things that we're going to be doing. Just having a good time, you know, meeting a bunch of people that we haven't met before, you know, and meeting, you know, old faces and everything like that. Like you know, I've yet to meet Steve in person and really excited to that and hopefully you know some of the people. Dave will definitely be intended, chris from Only Bows will be intended, and stuff like that, and there's a couple other guys that they're going to be trying to get out from further out.

Speaker 2:

You know that 10, 12 hours away, so they're going to be trying to make it out, but I'm really excited for this. This will be a yearly thing that we do and, yeah, so it's going to be 25 bucks per person for adults if you're over the age of 18. And I think it's 18, I think I'd said 18. I think 18 or maybe 16. I can't remember One of those. And then it is for the children under a certain age will be 10. And then also, if they're under, even younger than that, then it's just going to be free. So I will give you guys the exact prices tomorrow in the post.

Speaker 2:

I just cannot remember off the top of my head right now what I decided on, but looking forward to that, looking forward to meet you guys and you know anyone out there and the first first event with that we did went really well and excited for this one to hope this one goes really well too as well. And it will be open season of trout fishing, so I will be doing a bunch of trout fishing before that. So we'll be having some fun as well and maybe do some podcasts and stuff like that. But, boys, Peyton, why don't we start with you Been? Uh, it's been about two weeks. You had an unfortunate experience literally the other day. Why don't you tell us about that?

Speaker 1:

Yeah. So I was going into a spot that I killed this deer at last year and I had a camera sitting there for a while and it was sitting there for like four or five weeks. I went in and check it out Camera the car wasn't in all the way. I assumed it was myself. Now Maybe, maybe not, because I've been pretty good about that, but you know whatever. So then I put it back in, move it a little bit and then I'm just trying to see, check this travel where it's a choke point, you know where.

Speaker 1:

You know if you're coming from this really thick, big bedding area and if you're going to move along this transition line, the deer have to come through this area. At this creek crossing Um, and I've seen deer there and I know there's deer there and there's a bunch of tracks in the mud and it's beat down. So I just wanted to see what was coming through there and I put a SD card camera there. Six weeks go in, finally, um, to go in and pull the card, pull the camera and, uh, see what was up and it's a long hike in. Get down in there, open up the bottom of the camera no card. Somebody had a swipe my card, so it's huge bomber. I was really looking forward to seeing those pictures and seeing what was in there, but you know people suck.

Speaker 1:

So that was you. You're an asshole, I guess the craziest part, oh go Steve.

Speaker 4:

I'm sorry, go ahead.

Speaker 2:

No, no, floor is worse.

Speaker 4:

No, I mean it's funny because I've been listening to a couple other podcasts lately and they've kind of brought though that same topic up and it seems like it runs again, like right now, because I think it was just listening to the okayist and they were talking about how they don't even think that some one of the guys that was on there doesn't even think that trail cams should be allowed on public. And then there's people that are like, oh well, if there's a, you know, if some, if there's something on public, then it's public, so I should be able to do whatever I want. There's people intentionally going to the woods with spray paint or whatever you know, to destroy these cameras. You know, until it's illegal, you know that's not going to, that's going to be heinous behavior, right? So that's my opinion on it, you know so and I wouldn't have been like look if you have a card reader.

Speaker 1:

I travel with a card reader that I plugged him to my phone. If you, if you went, pulled the camera, pulled the card rather you know he or she, I guess, read the card, looked at the pictures, put the camera back, turn the camera back on and I got a picture of him coming and going. I would have had no problem with that. That's fine, it is public land. It is your right to pull that camera. I don't do that, but that's that. It is what it is. I mean, that's your right. You know it is on public land. You know, if somebody was sitting my stand, like as long as they weren't wrecking it and I didn't want to sit there again, like that is, you acknowledge that is what you sign up for, like again I wouldn't do that. But like I'm not that mad about it, like I wouldn't be that mad about that, yeah, that's it they just dole.

Speaker 1:

It is when that becomes or like destroying stuff, and it's like. It's like, yeah, should do. I love walking around the woods and walking by everybody's cell cameras. You know, like, no, like what. I kind of think it'd be more fun. That's just my style. My style I would probably like that, yeah, but I don't think it should be. You know that's, but I feel like that's more of like I don't know, I wouldn't want to take, I don't want that. Enough for me to want that to take it away from somebody else. You know, yeah, absolutely.

Speaker 4:

No, that makes sense.

Speaker 1:

Yeah, but you know it's. Yeah, it's just more frustrating. They just stole the card. They even closed the camera back up Like the door. They didn't even leave the door flat, they just took the card and closed it this.

Speaker 4:

So the camera that I had stolen this year, when I finally got that back which was a miracle in and of itself, situational miracle I didn't notice till I was about to put the camera back out in another spot and I was, I was right before I left they took the SD card out of it, out of the camera, the guy that and I'm like and now I'm sitting there and I'm like I know there's a really strong chance I'm going to see this guy in the woods because we're, because I'm not going to not hunt this area now you know that I put time into that I abandoned, so I'm probably going to see him and they'll probably be words. They'll be nice words, but there's definitely going to be words.

Speaker 3:

Can I have my SD card back?

Speaker 4:

Oh, I didn't. I did I not tell you guys that story? It doesn't have to be here?

Speaker 1:

Was that last week? Yeah, I think that was last week.

Speaker 3:

Yeah, he got into it a little bit yeah.

Speaker 4:

Yeah, I mean so really quick, long story short. Basically, the camera was out there, someone took it down it was public Went to ask permission to hunt on the adjacent property that backs up to it. The guy told me no, somebody else was there. He asked me where I was hunting and I said well, I was here until someone stole my camera and he's like oh yeah, I got your camera. It's over here in the garage. So yeah, I mean, you know, when does that happen?

Speaker 1:

Wow.

Speaker 2:

Those are still there. Yeah, those are still there.

Speaker 1:

I was surprised he just like fessed up to it. So bold I know.

Speaker 4:

Well, his eyes got real big when I was like, oh yeah, I was like I was hunting over in those woods there right, you know, not on your property, but the public that backs up to it. And I said I was hunting there until you know, someone stole my camera. And then his eyes just got big and he's like oh, that's your camera. I was like, uh yeah.

Speaker 4:

I'm surprised he fast up to it, though I was like oh it's great, yeah, well, I mean you know, and then, and like I said that, also open. But those are the kind of experiences you just you just have to be willing to be open to those because, like I had mentioned, like now I might have a turkey spot for another, turkey spot for the spring.

Speaker 1:

Cause. Do you think he thought that he was just confused on the lines, or was it like not even close?

Speaker 4:

Uh well, I mean it could. It could have been. I guess you could call it close, but if you've been living there, like I said, this place has a giant greenhouse on it, so it's been there a minute and I know that they've lived there forever so and that they've owned that property, so I would, you would think they would know, and they know Matt.

Speaker 1:

I don't want to say thought that they own stuff for generations, that they did.

Speaker 3:

Yeah, well, me too.

Speaker 4:

It's. It's somewhat annoying that someone would. You know, I think the most annoying thing was that I got forced out of a spot because someone gave a friend permission to hunt on public. You know what I mean Not knowing that it wasn't theirs. That was that was on. And then, of course, even more annoying was to find out that this guy killed the buck by taking my SD card that I was after initially.

Speaker 2:

Oh, oh.

Speaker 4:

Oh, oh.

Speaker 2:

Oh yeah, well trust me if I didn't.

Speaker 4:

If I didn't have that, that LK buck on uh that I wound up pursuing and and tagging out first week with, I probably would have. I would have been pretty bruised, there's no doubt. But yeah, that makes for a good story.

Speaker 2:

And you, you know what the wildest thing is. It's like Payton missed last week's episode and this was the exact conversation that we had, like you know, meant to be the SD. This was the SD card versus cell camera debate that we literally, literally had. And what happens? Literally a few days later, Peyton runs into the exact situation that we were basically talking about, which he even. He then said it. I told him I was like hey, man, we're, we're having this debate, this is kind of what we're talking about.

Speaker 1:

He's like it's like we're talking about the way we were, the way we were, you know we had to get that f**king stuff done.

Speaker 2:

you know, like we were just waiting for the, the one dog in the fight. Now, yeah, I have to go towards that Cause like man.

Speaker 3:

six weeks of Intel, that look that's, that's heartbreaking, that is you know, especially when you have, you have what we have two, two weeks left, two and a half Two weeks left, right?

Speaker 2:

So you know the yeah. So now it's, it's like man.

Speaker 1:

Whoever this? This douche is. I didn't look that beat up in there so I don't have the woman's closet about them using it anyway.

Speaker 1:

So I might, but it's just like it would have been nice to just have like a four shore, like there hasn't been anything on this camera in six weeks or anything the last three weeks, like we'll just write it off and we'll go ahead and spot, cause I only got, like this weekend, left to hunt. You know I'm at back injury so I haven't been able to get out. So if I can get out this week, that's probably it for this season.

Speaker 4:

I feel like it's a major design flaw on the lion share of these cameras out there too.

Speaker 1:

Why don't you like a lot on it, like build in some locks, you know just a little like Yeti cooler locks or something like a little. They're a little key lock on there. Yep, yeah, um, maybe that's gosh the price. The price on that would just. I was just saying yeah man we definitely go on there. I have to get to work designing that.

Speaker 4:

A lot of the, a lot of the trail cameras that I've seen in the Pine Barons down here. People are, they're, they're pretty, um, they re, they reinforce them pretty good, or they go with models that can at least have a cage on there that you can screw to. You know, screw to the tree. I should have taken a hilarious right which you're not supposed to do right Right On public, yeah, Um, and then put it and then put a chain around it. But you know, those options are there, but that's predominantly what I see. And then you have the guys that literally have a tripod feeder with, you know, a ladder, stand right next to it and the camera right in front of it, and you're like See, were you really going to hunt anywhere else?

Speaker 2:

anyway, Like why do you even need to?

Speaker 1:

why do you need to pay $10 a month for that?

Speaker 2:

camera.

Speaker 1:

It seems like you're pretty ready to make yourself at home there.

Speaker 4:

Well, trail cam, you know trail cams is the cheap crack. You know those photos, it is, it is, it is, it is, it is, it is, it is, it is, it is, it is, it is, it is, it is, it is, it is, it is, it is, it is, it is, it is, it is, it is it is because he's been like that since I saw him early, early this season.

Speaker 2:

But if you could see oh well, damn, I don't have my, uh, my camera on my laptop anymore, so it's over there. But you know he's, he's a unique buck and man, he's lost a lot of weight. I can tell like they are, they, these bucks, have lost a lot of weight because early in the year he was looking big and jacked and it was like, oh, like, all right, he's not, he doesn't have the best rack, but man, that body he's. He had a nice body and now it's just like, yeah, this guy's all rutted out and he's tired and he's worn down and uh, you know, those, those antlers are going to be dropping pretty soon, I imagine. So, um, excited about that. And then I just got my camera up and running because I think a raccoon or squirrel knocked it over, since, like September, october, and I have a giant. I had a giant on this camera, but you know, I didn't get after, just reminded me yeah, we, we, yeah we had some squirrels to get after too, but I didn't want to.

Speaker 2:

I wanted to hunt this spot, but it's a real unique spot to hunt and just a lot of activity going on during the day, like out in the, the fields, the playing fields and stuff like that. But I'm real, if he's still alive, I'm real excited. I don't think anyone has gone after him. I've you know, I don't think this deer is really pressured at all. I don't think this area is really pressured at all, except for, maybe, hikers. Um, so I kind of saved it and you know, now I'm looking to see what's. There's a nice rub right, like, maybe like 15 yards from where my camera is like a, really, and I'm I believe that's from him so hoping he shows up in the next week while I'm at the uh, the great American outdoor show and and stuff like that. So the game plan will be set for when I come home, that's perfect.

Speaker 2:

Yeah, um so, but which that reminds me well, I think we covered it last episode, but we will be at the great American outdoor show. Definitely, frank, and I will be there for the last weekend. I will be getting there on Tuesday, on Thursday, the, I think, 10th or 11th, and I'll be staying till Saturday. Um, I believe, frank, are you going up that Friday?

Speaker 3:

Yeah, so right now, because we had something come up for Friday, so it looks like I don't believe in early Saturday morning to go up. Okay, and we'll. We'll be staying until Sunday morning or afternoon, something like that. Okay.

Speaker 2:

And. Steve any every word on you, oh yeah.

Speaker 4:

Yeah, no, so I'm. I'm going up with my dad on Wednesday, just this coming. You know, two days from now, um, it's the only time that we can get off. It's Super Bowl weekend, so I can't, I can't ditch. It's just the way it goes. Uh, so, but no, really excited, really, really excited to be able to get out there, uh and and check things out for the first time, uh, this Wednesday. Looking forward to spending time with my dad too.

Speaker 2:

That's, that's great yeah.

Speaker 4:

I wish we were going.

Speaker 2:

Wednesday. I'll I'll be up Thursday, but the show is. It's just absolutely amazing. Like I, I it's one of my favorites. It's crazy and I say this every time and people are probably like oh man, like this. He talks about this all the time. But I think, bianca, she just loves it so much more than me, where she doesn't stop talking about. She literally said the other day she's like I'm so excited, I'm so excited, like I can't wait to go. She's like but next year we have to stay longer. And I'm like you do realize we're getting married next year. Like we're literally getting married Like in the next. So like I don't know if next year we're going to be able to stay longer, but yes, at some point we will be there for a long time. But I was like I don't know if it'll be. She's like oh yeah, that's right, we're getting married.

Speaker 1:

I was like yeah, wow.

Speaker 4:

On a related note, it's really funny. My my buddy, Mike, is, uh, is going to meet us out there, and we were. He was debating about going, whether he was going to go or not, and so we were talking about he's like man, I don't know, I don't know if I can go, man, I'm like why not? And he's like I just feel like if I go, I'm going to probably spend a whole bunch of money and I'm going to make some impulsive buys and all that and everything. And I just looked at him and I went dude, that's exactly why I'm going.

Speaker 2:

It's like it's like where. It's like we're a kid at a candy store, all over again. Like there's just so many products, like just so many, just being in being in the archery hall alone, there's just so much to do. I go to the archery hall every day multiple times and I talk to almost every single person and like day one I will get my list together and like, okay, when am I going to be buying, you know, later of the week, before I forget what is my priority? Like right, what? What is this? Then I see new sticks, or I see new, a new setup. I'm like I need that. I don't.

Speaker 3:

I don't need it, I want that so badly, like you know.

Speaker 2:

And there are. You see a new broad head that you're interested in. I hope I don't know if they will be, but I would love if iron wills there this year. Best believe I'm probably going to be going home with some iron wills. I do want to get into fixed with iron wills. I think I've made my decision. Am I still going to shoot sever? Never not going to shoot sever, I think, unless like some company says hey, listen, we'll give you this much money to shoot our broad head. But you know that's a whole different avenue. I love sever, but I like the annihilators. I picked up an annihilators two years ago at the show and I love them. I just don't like that whistling sound they make you know because they're cupped and everything. So to me I notice a sound. So if I notice it, a deer is 100% going to notice it. So that's my only thing.

Speaker 4:

If you want to go down the the fixed blade rabbit hole, then I mean you should definitely check out VPA archery while you're there, because they make some awesome, awesome stuff. They're one of their stuff, yeah. So if I, they're one of the companies that that is in that game, that's going to be there, so check them out.

Speaker 2:

Well, yeah, no, I'll definitely check them out, but we'll, we'll be, we'll save our, our broad head talk for for the summer, because yet again, that's a. That's just that one topic. There will be two hours.

Speaker 4:

Oh my gosh.

Speaker 2:

So, steve, it's not the end of the season for you, possibly possibly not the end of the season.

Speaker 4:

Well, yeah, it's a kind of a neat thing that happened. One of my buddies that I've recently reconnected with it's actually a childhood friend that I grew up with and he kind of moved all of the country and I did and we just reconnected and just you know, you kind of pick up where you leave off with people like that. And so he asked me he's like, he's like, so would you want to come check out my honey hole? And I was like, yeah, man for sure. Yeah, he's like it's, it's really secret. He's like I was like, of course it is, every everyone is. And and he's like no, seriously, he's like you can't tell anybody about this at all. And I'm like this is precious to me. I was like, don't worry. So he's, he dropped me the pin and he's sent me a text right afterwards like inspector gadget style and he goes this message will self-destruct in five seconds. So there's a.

Speaker 4:

There's one area down Reg set seven and eight that's late in the season down here, if you the zone, if you know, you know. And so we were able to get in there yesterday and kind of do some scouting around and look at things. And I've had deer on the trail cam that I put up there almost every hour today, except for maybe between two and three o'clock, so that's pretty exciting. There's definitely there's some bucks in there. You know nothing, nothing crazy, but you know still a ton of ton of does, yearlings and a couple of young bucks.

Speaker 4:

So I think what I'm really excited about is getting out with my buddy and hunting with him in the same tree, maybe doing some recording, and you know, kind of seeing, you know how much dough management we can do and how many we can stack in the next two weeks. It's going to be pretty awesome and yeah, it's. I mean it's, it's a blessing to be able to think, hey, okay, I am going to have two more weeks into the season, so you know we'll see what comes of it, but it's, it's really cool, it's really awesome, yeah.

Speaker 2:

Yeah, now that's, that's great to hear, and you know what is. So it's dough management only. Like or is he doing any? But, like you know, are you taking a buck if one comes out Like what? What's the case with that? Or is it also kind of what we're talking about? Like, are you you're going to probably pass up a dough that you think is a little on the heavier side, because she may she may be holding a fawn or something like that? Is that kind of what you're looking at?

Speaker 4:

So it's. It's interesting because I've been putting a lot of thought into it lately. Now, his goal this year? Because he's a trad shooter and this is his second year of trad and so, like a lot of the Chad guys, they want to get their first buck and they really don't care, you know, if it's a basket eight or not, or if it's a six or whatever. So that's his goal, right? So I'm not, and there's only really two bucks in there right now that we've seen that fit that profile and so I'm not going after them. I don't need to. So I would love, I would love to get his first trad boat buck on film. That would be really cool, yeah, but as far as my aspirations are concerned, yeah, I mean I thought about it more as far as what we talked about with does that are pregnant and all that.

Speaker 4:

I think, especially for the area where I hunted, where I chose not to, is an area that we're still trying to grow back, especially from EHD that hit us in a massive way two and a half years ago. I think taking a doe in that area for me was multifaceted. I'm not going to say that I'm not going to possibly take a doe that might be pregnant. It's not my first choice, but if it does happen I'm not trying to exaggerate there's easily 40 to 50 deer in this small little area. They are overrun and they need to be managed. If we can do the woods of service in that way and do our part for management, then again I don't know that not taking and I've changed my opinion on this because I listened to an ex.

Speaker 4:

I'm not necessarily trying to wrap somebody else's podcast, not that I think that's a bad thing, but I listened to another podcast this week and they had this guy. Dallas from the Oklahoma DNR was on there and he was debunking all kinds. This is a scientist and he was debunking all kinds of myths and prevalent facts that maybe aren't true about doze and the breeding and all of that. I continue to educate myself on those things and, like we were talking about what's the best time to take a doe, it's one of those questions we're going to continue to talk about.

Speaker 2:

Yeah.

Speaker 4:

If I have the opportunity to take some doze and get some meat in the freezer, that might happen.

Speaker 2:

Definitely. And, Mr Frank, there your season has come to close, correct yeah?

Speaker 3:

it's over for me. What happened? It sucks. It's closed up here. So, yeah, I just right now I still have my cameras out. I didn't go get them yet, but I think I'll just probably do some more scouting, go get probably some of my sets, because I told you next year I'm going to start a saddle hot and so I'm going to keep my two really good spots. I'll keep the tree stand there, but everything else is coming out because now, being mobile, I can't wait. I'm excited.

Speaker 4:

You're going to be like a kid in a candy store at the show.

Speaker 3:

Yeah, I'm going to be in this tree.

Speaker 4:

Just be glad trophy line is not going to be there this year with their new sticks oh my, goodness, yeah, I did see them now, oh my gosh, sorry guys.

Speaker 2:

Everyone's coming out with it. Yeah, it's everything's new and everything's shiny and it's just like oh my god, I want that. But I saw those sticks too, and yeah, those look phenomenal. But you know so you're the first one. That's going to be. That's in the off season, now that Steve is back in the game, and everything like that. Yeah, you said you're going to do some scouting, you're going to pull some sets, but what are you really looking for at this time of the year? What is something that you want to focus on within the next couple of weeks? You can't drop minerals or anything like that right At your spot.

Speaker 3:

Yeah, no, we can't. So basically, right now there's a few different pieces where I've been dying to check. I just haven't had the time because I've been chasing these other bucks around while I, you know, the season was open. So I'm dying to get in there and just look for sign, see what's going on. Like I said, there's so many different pieces that I could check. So I definitely want to do that and I mean I got to tell you guys I've been like contemplating the canoe idea a lot, so you know that might be coming up in the future, so we'll see what happens.

Speaker 4:

That'll be awesome.

Speaker 2:

Yeah, the canoe, that's going to be the thing. I'm right there with you, but you know so it seems like our for Turkey. Are you big of a Turkey on it?

Speaker 3:

Yeah, yeah. So Jersey, I basically I hunt the same spot, but actually I got a new piece that's actually private that the guy's going to let me hunt. It actually works out because his brother used to be engaged to my sister. So me and him started talking and come to find out he has like 76 acres, like like two minutes down the road from me. So they're deer hunters. So I don't want to, you know, impose on them. I told them look, you got your thing, you know. So he's like, hey, he's like. But you know he's like next year he's like Turkey bear, he's like you keep him for deer if you want to check it out. So that's another good thing. But I will be Turkey hunting upstate, though a lot on our property. So looking forward to that.

Speaker 4:

How's the flock up there?

Speaker 3:

It's weird. So every time we go up it's like one week you'll see like you can see like maybe 25, 30, 40. In the next week you go up you'll only see like two and sometimes you won't even see one. It's almost like the same flock like makes their way around like this, you know, like within like the couple miles and they just do like a loop almost. But when I hunted it last year during spring, turkey, they were there almost every day but it was just.

Speaker 3:

I had one encounter with the big Tom I was after and he came in. It was my fault, wrong setup, I moved spots and I was calling to see if anything was coming. There's like a power line that's basically like on top of our property and he was on the other side. So I set up in our woods and he came in and he kind of came above me and the hen he was with walked 15 yards from me and he would not commit. He stayed on that power line and basically till she did a loop and then he followed her. They went on the other side and basically on the neighboring property. So I'm gonna set up different this year, that's for sure.

Speaker 1:

Yeah, it's hard to call them up. From what I understand, they only. Or it's hard to call them down. Yeah, rather, from what I understand, they like to go. They'll go up to you, but I've heard that it's hard to get him to come down.

Speaker 3:

Yes, he was communicating with me the whole time and then, as soon as I could see him, he went quiet and he knew something was up and I was like, if I could get a shot at him, I'm gonna take it. But he just like because of the hill, like I would see his head for a minute and then he was gone, and then I would see him fan up and then he was gone. So, but that's how it goes. So.

Speaker 2:

I think. I think, since we're not gonna make this one too long, since we're gonna get into a lot of talk, I imagine next Monday and the last couple of weeks, I think it's time for idiot of the week, right or dummy of the week. I got a brand new one. This actually, they posted this yesterday. So, peyton, you missed it the last time. We started a new segment where I go on New Jersey Conservation Officers Association. So they all on Facebook or whatever they use and they post like, basically, citations are what you know, laws people have broken or whatever. They don't name anyone's name or anything like that, but they kind of they talk about the act and everything like that. So last week was the three bear carcasses that were found and this week it looks like this is a fishing one, looks like this is a brook trout. So it says, even during the activity of the six day Fire and Seas and District two officer remain vigilant for fishing violations. Officers apprehended multiple individuals for fishing violations, including fishing without a valid fishing license, possession of a trout without a valid trout stamp, possession of an undersized trophy trout and possession over the daily limit for trophy trout. The appropriate summons were issued from the December 2020 through barrel of law enforcement report to the Fish and Game Council. So this one's not as interesting as last time. But the reason why I picked this cause you don't hear really too much about fishing stuff during the hunting season and the trophy definitely was a brook trout. That's the picture of the game. So I'm a huge wick trout fishing coming up you know, in the next couple of months. I decided to go with this one and listen.

Speaker 2:

I love trout fishing. I think it's one of the coolest things to do during the springtime. Before you start that, that turkey hunting segment, I think New Jersey, because the water's warm up so quickly. We don't have long enough time to do it. But I love the fact that we got a native brook. You know some brook fish or brook trout.

Speaker 2:

I don't know if any of you guys have caught any native brookies before, but it is. They're beautiful, beautiful. I've caught in like one or two and it's so much fun. Like I just love it, especially in a small stream or something like that, when you're like, oh, there's no fishing there. Like I think the first time I caught my first native brook trout was probably maybe the size of my, like my hand maybe, and it was in this tiniest of little stream that flows right into this big river, and I was like we're fishing down like there's not gonna be anything in here, like you can't even see it, like these are like little puddles, like some of these spots where, like little pools throw my line in, all of a sudden boom, I get hit and it's this tiny thing just go like flapping like a million miles per hour.

Speaker 2:

And I was able to catch it. And you know you gotta be real gentle with them and if these are native so you don't wanna, you know, mishandle and everything. So I'm being really cautious only had her out the water for maybe like two or three seconds and just put it right back in and it's like I just caught my first like native brook trout. Yeah, it was small and it wasn't one of the giant ones that you hope for, but, like man, it was a pretty cool experience and I'm excited to get on some trout leader this year.

Speaker 4:

That's awesome.

Speaker 2:

Yeah, absolutely. But whoever that guy was, you suck and you give hunters and fishers a bad name. So you know, but guys, anything to really go over anything else? This week I know not much has really happened. We got a bunch of. I think we're in that lull time Like it's like all right season is slowly creeping up to an end. It's the weather is just bipolar as hell. We don't know what type of weather we're gonna get. Right now it's just too warm.

Speaker 4:

It's gonna be 60 degrees on Saturday. I can't believe it.

Speaker 2:

Yeah it's. I just can't. I cannot deal with this terrible warm weather for winter and then the days are starting to get longer. So it's also like now you're starting to get that push. It's like all right, I'm ready for trout fishing, I'm ready for turkey season. I know Peyton's got the itch over there, frank's got the itch, I know. You know a bunch of guys have got there starting to get the itch for the turkey season. I know Kyle's dying to get out there. You know we have some events. We have the great American outdoor show coming up. You know the show down in South Jersey there's going to be a bunch coming up. It's kind of like all right. Like we said in, I think, one of the first episodes that you two were on, it's like we're kind of getting there. It's like the season's starting to run its course. Like I got a haircut, like I had to go to a wedding the other day so I chopped off my hair early.

Speaker 2:

Earlier than I normally would. So I'm kind of like in that phase where it's like, all right, let's just work, and if I can get out like I got out like today, getting out to move some cameras and stuff, it was nice, because it feels like it's like all right, I'm not worrying about bumping deer, I'm not, even though I should have been. It's like I'm just going to walk in, find some sign oh, find some old sign and just like set up a camera. I didn't really worry about making too much noise. Normally in the season I'm trying to tiptoe and just be like all right, I gotta be super cautious. But right now, like this late in the year, I'm just like I'm over it. I just, you know, ready for that final day, hopefully get one more deer and or a deer Jesus.

Speaker 3:

A deer.

Speaker 2:

I can't believe saying a deer, but yeah, yeah, I don't think there's really anything else. Peyton, you got anything?

Speaker 1:

Nope, nothing for me. Short update Hopefully I have more next week. Get out in the woods a little bit this weekend to close out the season you know like.

Speaker 2:

And we got coyote. We're going to be trying to get out for some coyote and foxes, stuff like that Definitely going to hit some coyote. So so it's going to heat back up from us. We'll be back on next week as well, but we'll be giving, I guess, our recap from the Great American Outdoor Show, for the most part, talking about all the cool things that we see and experiences and getting Steve's. That'll be your first time, right, steve?

Speaker 4:

Yeah, yeah, that'll be my first time out there, so it's going to be exciting.

Speaker 2:

And Frank have you been there before?

Speaker 3:

Yeah, no, this will be my first time too.

Speaker 2:

So we got a couple of new guys heading out to the Great American Outdoor Show, excited to see what they say. We're definitely going to have to get Peyton out there next year. I'm telling you, it is an absolute blast For sure you know.

Speaker 2:

but, like I said, go check us. If you want to come to the game dinner, go check us out. If you want to go to the one in South Jersey, if you need any information, hit up Steve and he'll fill you in with all that information. And yeah, I think that's where we end it for tonight. I hope you guys enjoyed this episode and we'll see you guys next time.
